Path Skillz Pilot 2017

The Path Skillz project was developed and delivered as a pilot by Paths for All in 2016.

The project was developed to encourage young people, to engage with a project which demonstrated the importance of paths in communities and provide them with the skills to improve a local path.

The first pilot group consisted of five young people between the ages of 16 and 17. The path identified for the project was at Gartmorn Dam in Sauchie, Clackmannanshire. This  route is well used by families, dog walkers and visitors.

The young people spent time consulting with the local community, the Local Authority Access Officer and Countryside Rangers before surveying the path and finally improving it.

The young people worked together to improve a set of steps and open up  viewing point which was previously overgrown ensuring that users now get a wonderful view over the water and surrounding hills.

To celebrate their achievements, the young people organised an opening event for their path which involved a guided walk and a BBQ. This was a great success which brought together many members of the community and gave the young people the chance to be recognised for all their hard work.

The benefits of the upgraded path are being felt throughout the community with one path user commenting

“the work (by the youths) has made the walk around the dam more enjoyable.” Other local residents thought it’s “good to see people caring for the Country Park” and that the youth’s work is “a massive improvement thank you!”
